A production-ready test mule of the new Mahindra Scorpio has been spotted on test. The new Scorpio is expected to debut by early 2022 and is likely to be equipped with a petrol powertrain as well.
Mahindra recently launched the XUV700, and the SUV has already received 50,000 bookings. Mahindra will commence deliveries of the petrol variant of the XUV700 by the end of October 2021, and the diesel buyers will start receiving their SUVs towards the end of November.
Now, the next SUV in the pipeline is the new-generation Mahindra Scorpio. A test mule of the new-gen Scorpia was spotted recently, which suggests that the SUV has reached its production-ready form.
The launch of the new Mahindra Scorpio is slated for the first quarter of 2022. The new Scorpio will break cover in January 2022, and an official price announcement will likely be held in February-March 2022.
We suspect the Mahindra Scorpio will be launched with a petrol drivetrain as well. The 2.0-litre turbo petrol motor, which is offered in the Thar and the XUV700, will also make its way into the new Scorpio.
The new Mahindra Scorpio will be marketed as a true blue SUV, with a body-on-ladder chassis layout. The 2.2-litre diesel engine will continue to power the new Scorpio; however, that powertrain will receive major updates. There are very good odds that an automatic gearbox will be offered with both petrol and diesel variants of the Scorpio. It goes without saying that the Scorpio will be offered with an optional 4X4 drivetrain.
In Mahindra's product portfolio, the new Scorpio will be positioned below the XUV700, alongside the Mahindra Thar. While the Mahindra Thar is a lifestyle off-road vehicle, the new Scorpio will be offered as a more utilitarian and practical SUV for buyers with a one-car garage, until the Mahindra Thar five-door arrives.
