General Motors has just given us a turbocharged four-cylinder Camaro with added features in the new Turbo 1LE trim.
General Motors has revealed the 2019 Chevy Camaro Turbo 1LE. With a majorly reworked front grille, subtle updates to the cabin and a brand new four-cylinder turbocharged engine, the Turbo 1LE will be the entry-level performance trim of the 2019 Chevrolet Camaro.
The most significant visual update is the new front grille, which is now more striking and aggressive. The revision to the front fascia will be offered throughout the entire range. The design uses larger vents with improved aero. The SS model gets a ‘Flowtie’ for the first time to provide an increased airflow to the engine by an additional 2.5 cubic metres per minute, while also making the car look cool in the process.
The new Camaro gets a set of new exterior shades that include ‘Riverside Blue’ as a tribute to the 1967 Penske-Donohue Camaro Trans-Am racer. The car can be equipped with 20-inch wheels, new LED headlights and blacked-out smoked taillights. The interior, however, gets mild updates, with new ambient lighting and a rear camera mirror on the higher trims like the 2SS and the ZL1. GM has also given the new car the latest Infotainment 3 system from Chevrolet, with improved Bluetooth, more apps and enhanced graphics.
As for the mechanical updates, the most significant change will be found in the performance-oriented SS model as the V8 gains a new 10-speed automatic gearbox with custom launch control and line lock features. The six-speed manual will also be available, but detailed specs are yet to be disclosed. The Turbo 1LE uses the same 2.0-litre, four-cylinder turbo motor from the standard car, but the motor has been tuned to generate bumped-up power of 271bhp and 400Nm of torque. It comes paired only with a six-speed manual transmission and has a specially tuned suspension with a near 50/50 front to rear weight distribution. The driving dynamics can be tailored by the driver with the help of the new Track Mode or Competition mode, which will allow for performance readouts, launch control and gear shift indicators, among many other cool features.
The 2019 Camaro Turbo 1LE along with the rest of the range will go on sale later this year in their respective markets. It’s a shame that GM decided to exit the Indian market, as the Turbo 1LE could have helped the marquee build its brand in the same way the Mustang did for Ford in India.
