Inspired by the LIV-2 concept, the SsangYong Rexton packs in a stylish design, lightweight components and is more spacious than before.
SsangYong has revealed the next-generation Rexton ahead of its official debut at the upcoming 2017 Seoul Motor Show. The new Rexton will go on sale in Korea first, following which it’s expected to arrive at the Indian shores later this year.
At the moment, SsangYong has only revealed a few pictures of the new Rexton, revealing the exterior and interior design of the vehicle. The front fascia of the Rexton marks the biggest change in terms of design – it’s inspired by the firm’s LIV-2 concept from 2016 Paris Motor Show. Thanks to updates, the Rexton looks more upmarket and tasteful than before. Everything on the front is new – like, the bumper is more aggressive, there’s a new grille and the headlamps with LED DRLs look striking. Around the side, the Rexton gets new design alloy wheels while the overall silhouette has a hint of the old model. As for the back, Rexton has not shared any picture of the rear section thus far.
Dimension wise, the Rexton measures 4,850mm long, 1,920mm wide and 1,800mm high with a wheelbase of 2,864mm. Compared to the outgoing model, it’s longer by 130mm and has a wheelbase that’s 44m longer – which should help make it more spacious on the inside.
In the new model, SsangYong has revamped the interior of the Rexton completely. The cabin sports a dual-tone brown-black theme with lots of faux wood and leather bits thrown into the mix. The main highlight here though is the addition of a large 9.2-inch touchscreen infotainment system that comes with a 360 degree surround view camera and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity.
On the mechanical front, the new model will reportedly come with two engine options – a 178bhp/420Nm 2.2-litre turbo diesel and 221bhp/350Nm 2.0-litre turbo petrol. Both will come paired to a seven-speed automatic transmission or a six-speed manual. It will have both rear- and all-wheel drive forms on offer.
Mahindra is expected to bring the new SsangYong Rexton in India by the end of this year, albeit there’s no official confirmation on that. When launched, expect it to be priced between Rs 20 lakh and Rs 25 lakh.
