Volvo announces tech updates across the entire line-up for 2017 models.
Volvo has announced a number of upgrades – mainly related to electronics and connected technologies – for its cars of model year 2017. Among all the models, the flagship XC90 has received the maximum number of updates, including an updated semi-autonomous drive technology. The company has also made some significant mechanical revisions on its 60 series models.
Even though the XC90 is brimming with all the latest features, Volvo has added yet more tech in the SUV. The 2017 XC90 gets Pilot Assist II system (first introduced in the new S90 sedan). The semi-autonomous system can accelerate, brake or steer the vehicle at speeds of up to 130km/h. In the current model, the system could only work below speeds of 50Km/h. The infotainment system of the XC90 has been updated as well.
The D5 diesel variant of the SUV will also be available with “PowerPulse” technology that uses compressed air to deliver instantaneous response by spooling up the turbo quickly at lower rpms. Safety being Volvo’s forte, the XC90 will now come with “Run-off road mitigation” system that uses auto-steer in case the driver loses control of the vehicle on a “well-marked highway”.
The vehicle’s standard collision avoidance system, City Safety, also receives an update and features something called “Large Animal Detection”. The system is of course not as simple you might think. It’s a tech-developed for keeping an eye (literally) on animals with erratic behavior (kangaroos, deer etc.).
Coming to the 60 Series cars, the four-cylinder T5 petrol engine will now come standard with all-wheel drive on all cars in the series. In addition to that, the S60 Cross Country will now be available with the D3 diesel engine in select markets. New wheels and colours will be offered across all the models (S60, XC60) in the range.
Volvo has also announced some common upgrades across its entire product range. This includes Volvo On Call smartphone app that allows drivers to access and control a wide range of in-car features through their smartphones. All the cars will also come equipped with “CleanZone” technology that ensures that outside air is effectively filtered before entering the cabin. The recently revealed 2017 Volvo also comes with listed features and new-age tech.
