Honda's latest crossover will take on the likes of the Ford EcoSport and Renault Duster in Brazil. Expected to launch in India sometime later in 2017.
In a few weeks’ time, Honda will reveal a new compact-crossover to the world. Dubbed the WR-V, which apparently stands for ‘Winsome Runabout Vehicle’, the new model will make its debut at the 2016 Sao Paulo Auto Show in November. Sales of the new crossover are likely to begin from 2017 in Brazil, post which, it’s also expected to make it to the Indian market.
Before the official unveil though, Honda has done its bit to tease the WR-V. The company has released a sketch of the new crossover along with some details. The WR-V will be based around the same platform as the Jazz hatchback, albeit it will sport a puffed-up look that is also demonstrated in the teaser. Up front, it features a wide grille, chiseled headlamps and a stubby bumper that houses a silver skid plate to give it a bit of an aggression. Since it’s based around the Jazz, it’s expected to be a sub-4metre vehicle, which’ll also make it an ideal product for the Indian market. Even in Brazil, the WR-V will compete with the Ford EcoSport, Renault Duster, etc.
There isn’t any concrete information on the WR-V’s technical specifications thus far. In Brazil, it’s expected to retain the Brazil-spec Jazz’s 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine that runs on both petrol and ethanol. For the Indian market, it’s likely to feature the 1.5-litre diesel or 1.2-litre petrol engine, currently available with the Jazz in the country. Expect it to come in only FWD layout with a 5-speed manual or a CVT automatic.
Considering the growing demand for compact-SUVs in India, the WR-V should do well in our market if and when it’s launched here. Expect it to be priced around Rs 8 lakh – Rs 10 lakh in India.
