2015 was a year filled with everything new from the word go, almost every manufacturer introduced a new car to the Indian market, set new benchmarks and gave everyone something to think about.
Mercedes Benz alone launched 15 new cars in India including a whole range of their Performance AMGs. Renault dropped a bomb with the KWID, and Maruti-Suzuki threw in the Baleno and S-Cross at us.
Now that the year is gone and done with, the numbers are in and here are the 10 best selling cars of 2015.
- Maruti Suzuki Alto 800 – 249,507 units
The car that changed the way India traveled was the Maruti 800. 32 years after it was first introduced to the Indian consumers, giving hope to many families along the way, the 800 still remains a significant vehicle that deserves and receives its due.
The car was envisioned to be the very first stepping stone for Indian automotive industry. Its evolved cousin the Maruti-Suzuki Alto 800 carries on the torch with the fire on top shining as bright as the sun. In the year 2015, Maruti-Suzuki sold 249,507 units of the Alto 800 making it the best selling car in the country.
- Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire – 219,248 units
One of the most popular cars segments in Indian is the compact sedan segment. The reason being the best compromise between sizable interior space, and small enough to park in congested places. In this segment, the Maruti Suzuki Dzire has been the king when it comes to sales numbers. In 2015 alone, the Dzire sold over 2.1 lakh times. With the launch of the diesel AMT variant, the Dzire gained another edge over its competitors becoming he second car in the segment with an automatic after the Tata Zest.
- Maruti Suzuki Swift – 192,376 units
A global car from Suzuki that has done wonders for the Japanese marquee across the globe, also did tremendously well on Indian soil was the Maruti Suzuki Swift. Since its introduction in India, without any delay the Swift became the most popular hatchback in the Indian market. Month by month the Swift just kept climbing in sales numbers and now it’s the 3rd best selling car in 2015 with over 1.9 lakh units sold in the country.
- Maruti Suzki WagonR – 155,754 units
Another vehicle that sits in the top 5 is… you guessed it, another Maruti. The company has gained a reputation of the most trusted brand in the country for its reliability and cheap to run cars. The 4th most popular car in India is the 1 litre Maruti-Suzuki WagonR. Despite its age, the WagonR still holds up pretty well with the modern choices the Indian car market has to offer. With 1.55 lakh units sold in 2015, the WagonR sits quite comfortably in the top 5 on this list.
- Hyundai Elite i20 - 119,705 units
The car that break the flow of Maruti Suzuki is the Hyundai Elite i20. A global car from Hyundai that made its international debut on Indian soil in 2014. To be able to go shoulder to shoulder with the competition’s cars with modern features, Hyundai launched an updated version of the Elite i20 in 2015 with a touch screen infotainment system. Hyundai Motor India Limited pushed out 119,705 units of the car in 2015 making it the 5th best selling car of the year.
- Hyundai Grand i10 – 111,306 units
The Grand i10 is the second car that made it on this list from Hyundai. Selling 111,306 units in 2015, the Grand i10 sits in 6th place, just out of the top 5 best selling cars in the country. Despite Hyundai leaving it alone and not tinkering with it too much every now and then to boost sales, the Grand i10 still makes it on the list with its high sales numbers in India being one of the popular cars available to the Indian consumer.
- Mahindra Bolero – 80,914 units
The Bolero has been around for a very long time in the Indian market. Given its age and popularity ever since, it comes as no surprise that for another year, the Bolero is the best selling SUV of 2015. Its the only SUV on the list and the 7th best selling car in India. Due to its rugged nature and go anywhere ability, with a generous seating capacity, the Bolero is the most loved car from Mahindra inferred from the sales figures. Mahindra sold a total of 80,914 units of the Bolero in India in 2015.
- Honda City – 76,546 units
A segment Maruti has recently found some footing in, the C2 sedan market has been dominated by the Honda City ever since it was introduced. Despite Maruti trying their level best to dethrone it, the Honda City still remains the best selling sedan in its segment. Last year Honda sold 76,546 units of the sedan in India. Honda introduced it with a 1.5-litre diesel option the year before when the company launched the fourth generation of the Honda City in India. The diesel option only helped Honda strengthen its position in the market making the the 8th most popular car of 2015.
- Maruti Suzuki Celerio - 74,842 units
The car that set the trend for automatic transmissions in India was the Maruti Suzuki Celerio. Maruti introduced the car at the 2012 Auto Expo and their newly developed AMT transmission that set the ball rolling for the car. Following the Celerio, Maruti has introduced almost every car it sells in the Indian market with an AMT and its competitors followed.
Now the Celerio is one of the most popular cars in India, especially since Maruti Suzuki also made a 3 cylinder 800cc diesel engine, the world smallest diesel engine for the car. The company sells 7,000 units per month on an average and has sold 74,842 units in the whole of 2015 making it the 9th best selling car of the year.
- Maruti Suzuki Omni – 72,778 units
Still mass produced along the lines of the same principles and chassis that it was first launched with decades ago, the Maruti Suzuki Omni is the 10th best selling car on the list.
In 2015, Maruti pushed out a total of 72,778 units of the Omni which is a commendable feat considering how old the vehicle still is. While the car was available for private ownership and families when it was first introduced, the majority of the Omni now only caters to the commercial and fleet market.
