The production version of the Yamaha YZF-R9, the fully-faired version of the MT-09, will be officially unveiled on October 9. Yamaha announced this recently through a teaser video, which refused to give us a clear picture of the sports bike but promised 'The Dawn of a New Era'. The teaser showed off the bike featuring a single projector headlamp with an LED daytime running lamp in a style similar to the Yamaha R7, while the five-spoke rear wheel seem to be borrowed from the R6. More details on design are expected to be revealed in due course.
The upcoming Yamaha R9 will be based on the current MT-09. Considering that, we expect the company to offer an 888cc, three-cylinder liquid-cooled engine that makes 117bhp at 10,000rpm and 93Nm of peak torque at 7,000rpm in the MT-09. Expect the R9 to get the engine in a slightly different state-of-tune. The expected transmission is a 6-speed unit, the same as the standard variant of the MT-09.

Speaking of variants, the MT-09 is currently available in three variants – standard, Y-AMT, and SP. It is the first Yamaha model to get the new Yamaha Automated Manual Transmission (Y-AMT) that uses two electromechanical actuators to automate the clutch and gear shifts in the 6-speed transmission.
Yamaha YZF-R9: What else to Expect?
Coming back to the YZF-R9, the model will slot between the R1 and the R7 upon arrival on the international market. There is a possibility that the company might introduce the track-oriented R9M alongside the R9. Features-wise, the R9 will likely offer a digital instrument cluster (with Bluetooth connectivity and navigation), Yamaha MyRide app, cruise control, self-cancelling turn indicators, USB-C charging, and three preset ride modes (Sport, Street, and Rain) with customisable settings.

As far as the Indian market goes, there is no word on Yamaha bringing the R9 here. The Japanese company does have plans to introduce the R7, the MT-07, and other premium vehicles in India, though.
