Alongside the R3 sport bike, Yamaha launched its naked street bike – the MT-03 – in our market late last week. With the latter, the bikemaker hopes to take on the likes of the KTM 390 Duke, BMW G 310 R, and the Keeway K300 N, while the Yamaha R3 sees the closest rival in the Aprilia RS 457. Both Yamaha bikes come powered by a 321cc, parallel-twin, liquid-cooled engine that is mated to a 6-speed gearbox. Power and torque figures are rated at 42bhp at 10,750rpm and 29.5Nm at 9,000rpm, respectively. Also available is a slip-and-assist clutch for seamless operation.
Although the YZF-R3 and the MT-03 have just landed on our shores, Yamaha has already come out with an official accessories list for the bikes. For those looking to customise and spec up their bikes, Yamaha is offering a rear seat cowl (in two colour options) as well as a windshield kit (for aiding the aerodynamics), both of which can be added for an extra cost. Read on to find out their prices:
Yamaha R3 | Yamaha MT-03 | |
Seat Cowl | Rs 7,500 (Blue-Black) | Rs 7,500 (Black) |
Windshield Kit | Rs 8,200 | - |

Yamaha YZF-R3, MT-03: Styling
While the bikes share the same motor and chassis, the Yamaha YZF-R3 and the MT-03 are differentiated in terms of styling. Although its design is about three years old, the R3 sport bike has been given a contemporary flair and sporty looks, with a sharper headlamp design, sporty fairing, clip-on handlebars, a curved fuel tank, split-style seats, a raked tail section, and a compact LED taillight. The model is available in Yamaha Black and Icon Blue paint options.
Meanwhile, the naked MT-03 looks quite similar to the popular MT-15. Yamaha's MT-03 has an aggressive face, featuring a projector headlamp with spoilers, split-style LED daytime running lights, and muscular bodywork. Other bits include an upswept side-mounted exhaust, a wide 14-litre fuel tank, and a slim LED tail lamp. Here, Yamaha offers two colour options – Grey/Cyan Blue and Midnight Black, depending on the availability of stock.
Yamaha YZF-R3, MT-03: Features
Features-wise, Yamaha bikes are decently equipped, with an LCD instrument console without Bluetooth, LED illumination, and dual-channel ABS. But it misses out on many frills like launch control, traction control, a bi-directional quick-shifter, a TFT display with smartphone connectivity and turn-by-turn navigation, and riding modes.
Yamaha YZF-R3, MT-03: Cycle Parts
Both bikes feature upside-down forks at the front and a mono-shock at the rear, while the braking hardware consists of discs at both ends. That said, the discs come mounted on 17-inch wheels.
