Working on electric scooter platform for Indian market with localised parts: Yamaha
Yamaha is currently working on an electric scooter tailored for India. The company has confirmed that the upcoming product will take major inspiration from the Neo EV that the company sells in Europe.
Yamaha will soon enter the EV segment in India with a product based on the Neo EV.
Even as formidable events spread across the country with electric scooters, India has shown a steady rise in its sales in recent times. The segment which started with a majority of new manufacturers is now seeing a rise in established makers as well. In the same breath, one such manufacturer which has answered the question was Yamaha. In our recent interaction, YMIG Spokesperson, Eishin Chihana san has shed light on the company's plan to debut its EV in India
"To meet the growing demand in the EV scooter market, our engineers in India are working on an Electric scooter platform for the Indian market, in coordination with the team at YMC. The Neo’s EV in Europe is one of our strongest candidates in terms of design for this platform, but we need to rework the motor and battery specifications to make it suitable for the Indian riding conditions. We are also closely studying the market demand for electric scooters and conducting the necessary research to identify and understand the requirements of Indian customers. Before launching EVs in India, we shall be identifying and using Indian suppliers for localization of parts, even for things like mechatronic systems, to achieve an accessible price point for India." Eishin Chihana san said.
Considering that the Neo EV is a fairly successful model for the company in Europe, we can only wait to see the effect Yamaha's first EV will have in the Indian market.
