Despite sharing a common platform, the two motorcycles have very different uses. The Scrambler 400X is designed for light off-road and on-road use, while the Triumph Speed 400 is a modern-retro roaster. The former has bigger wheels and a suspension system with longer travel than the latter. In contrast to the Speed 400's road-biased tyres, it has block-patterned ones. Moreover, the 400X is 9kg heavier than the Speed 400 at 185 kg.

As mentioned, the bikes use the same 398cc, single-cylinder, liquid-cooled engine that generates 39.5bhp at 8,000rpm and 37.5Nm at 6,500rpm. The TR-series engine comes paired with a 6-speed gearbox and a slipper and assist clutch.

In terms of features, the bikes have a digi-analogue screen with a fuel gauge meter, digital tachometer, gear position indication, and trip information. They also have ride-by-wire, dual-channel ABS (anti-lock braking system), a USB-C charging connector, and all LED lighting.
