Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India (HMSI) is on a roll. Earlier this month, the company announced that they sold more than 5 million units in the financial year ending March 2017. And now, they have rolled out the 15 millionth Activa from its assembly line in Gujarat.

The Honda Activa made its debut in 2001 and in the first year of its launch the scooter registered sales of over 55,000 units. Gradually gaining popularity, within three years of its launch, the Activa was already dominating the automatic scooter segment. In 2015-16, Honda announced that more than 10 million Activas were sold.

With an average of over 2,00,000 units sold each month, the Activa is not just the highest selling two-wheeler in India, but across the world. In fact, in the financial year 2016-17, Honda has recorded sales of 27,59 lakh Activas, which is more than 50 per cent of the total two-wheelers sold by the company.

Minoru Kato, President & CEO, Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India Pvt. Ltd. said, “India is getting scooterized like never before. In just 7 years, scooter segment contribution to the total industry has doubled from 16% (in 2009-10) to 32% (in 2016-17). And leading this trend is Activa which single-handedly re-activated the declining scooter segment way back in 2001 & become the Number One selling two-wheeler both in India and the World!”

This year, Honda plans to further accelerate its growth plans with a target to record sales of 6 million units. The Japanese bike maker also announced its plans of launching 4 new motorcycles this year. The first of the lot is expected to be the Africa Twin, which is likely to make its debut in India sometime in July.
