For several popular models such as the Gold Wing, the CBR1000RR Fireblade, and the CBR 600 RR, the renowned Japanese bikemaker Honda has issued recalls in the US and Germany. The motorcycles that are subject to the most recent recall were produced in the period from 2018 through 2020. Notably, over 20,000 bikes are reportedly impacted by this move from the manufacturer. These include 2,264 units coming from Germany and 17,374 units from the US.
The company claims that a malfunctioning fuel pump is the reason for the recall. The fuel pump's impeller, according to the manufacturer, was not cast per standards and may eventually crack owing to fuel residues. This could ultimately lead to a pump failure and the vehicle shutting off. According to complaints received by the Japanese bike manufacturer, Honda will replace the fuel pump at no cost to the customer. For Germany, the aforementioned repair is required for the Honda Gold Wing models manufactured between 2018 and 2020, the CBR1000RR Fireblade built between 2018 and 2019, and the CBR 600 RR. The issue has only been encountered by Honda in America and Germany thus far. Whether this also holds for other markets or not, is yet to be officially confirmed
Honda's Latest Recall: Other Key Details
As per the latest Safety Recall from the NHTSA, this specific recall has been in the works since August 2019, following four motorcycles that failed to start during dealership setup. Early in 2020, Honda determined that the fuel pump units would be acceptable provided they were fitted in a 40-day window. When a quality assessment revealed that even the pre-40-day installs were flawed, the decision had to be reversed by late 2023. For the uninitiated, a safety recall in Japan was announced towards the end of January, followed by the batches in the US in February. This recall issue resulted in 142 claims thus far between August 5, 2019, and December 28, 2023, with no fatalities or crashes.
Regarding Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India (HMSI), the company offers the Gold Wing Tour for sale in India; the ex-showroom price of the model stands at Rs 39.20 lakh (ex-showroom). However, the litre-class CBR1000RR and CBR 600 RR aren't available here.
