Ducati has launched its first single-cylinder motorcycle in India. Priced at Rs 16.50 lakh (ex-showroom), the brand-new Ducati Hypermotard 698 Mono uses a new Superquadro Mono engine, which makes its debut along with the motorcycle. Displacing 659cc, the liquid-cooled, short-stroke, single-cylinder Superquadro Mono belts out with 76bhp at 9,750rpm and 63Nm of peak torque at 8,000rpm while being mated to a 6-speed gearbox and a slip-and-assist clutch. If fitted with a Termignoni exhaust system (for track use only), these numbers rise to 83.3bhp and 67Nm.
Based on the 1,285cc Superquadro that powers the Ducati 1299 Panigale, the new Superquadro Mono comes with the desmodromic valve system, which helps create high rpm power. Claimed to be the most 'high-performance road-going single-cylinder engine ever', the Mono uses the same 116mm diameter piston as the 1299 Panigale but gets a longer stroke of 62.4mm, resulting in an extreme bore-to-stroke ratio of 1.86.

Other engine components include the titanium intake valves, steel exhaust valves, as well as the combustion chamber, all borrowed from the 1299 Panigale. The bike also offers a bidirectional quick-shifter – the range-topping RVE gets the quick-shifter as standard, while the standard version offers it as an optional extra. Speaking of which, Ducati has currently brought in the standard variant only. As per Ducati, the RVE will make its way here at a later date.
Ducati Hypermotard 698 Mono: Hardware
The Ducati Hypermotard 698 Mono uses a tubular steel trellis frame connected to a steel-tube subframe. For suspension, the bike gets a 45mm Marzocchi upside-down front fork and a rear monoshock from Sachs, fully adjustable on both ends. Stopping power comes from a front 330mm disc with a radial M4.32 calliper and a rear 240mm disc with a single-piston floating calliper. These discs are mounted on 17-inch, 5-spoked alloy wheels wrapped in 120/70 front and 160/60 rear Pirelli Diablo Rosso IV tyres. The kerb weight of the Hypermotard 698 Mono stands at 151 kilograms (without fuel).
