BMW Motorrad has introduced its new automated shift assistant (ASA), 'an innovative technical solution' that uses two electromechanical actuators to automate the clutch and gear shifts in the 6-speed transmission. When a rider wants to upshift or downshift, the gearshift lever sensor sends a signal to the transmission control unit (TCU). Additional sensors determine the engine speed (RPM) and clutch position. These values are then transmitted to the TCU, which in conjunction with the engine control unit (ECU) adjusts the gearshifting parameters according to the riding style and mode. This, according to BMW Motorrad, makes riding simpler and more comfortable. Compared to a conventional shift assistant, there is no need to control the clutch manually, making starting, stopping, and manoeuvring a breeze.

Also, the company's new automated shift assistant is said to create an even more direct link to the powerful boxer engine, as the precise clutch actuation makes it even easier to control the riding experience through the throttle grip and gearshift lever. While the company has yet to reveal which motorcycles will offer this ASA, its mention of the 'boxer engine' implies that this will be used on the R line of motorcycles, including ADVs and retro roadsters.
BMW's ASA: Two Modes
BMW's ASA will allow riders to choose between two modes (D and M). In D (dynamic) mode, the automatic shift assistant comes into its own, meaning the system automatically controls the gear changes. Meanwhile, the M (manual) mode allows the rider to move the gearshift lever in the desired direction in the conventional style. If the rider doesn't shift when the engine revs fall below a gear-dependent minimum speed, the system will automatically downshift, thereby preventing the engine from stalling.
According to BMW, both modes let you get perfectly executed automated gear changes with smooth interruption of traction, resulting in efficient motorcycle acceleration and increased riding stability.
BMW's ASA: Benefits
BMW's automatic shift assistant offers the following benefits:
- It eliminates the need for the rider to operate the clutch.
- It enables flexible and convenient gear changes for more riding pleasure.
- It offers a choice of manual or automatic gear shifting.
- It automatically adapts gear shifts to the rider's dynamic preferences in D mode.
- It eliminates the possibility of engine stalling due to unfavourable gear shifts.
