The Pulsar NS400Z, Bajaj Auto's newest model, was launched in India last month at Rs 1.85 lakh (ex-showroom). This is a top-of-the-line bike from the Chakan-based manufacturer, which is also the 'Biggest Pulsar Ever'. The rivals for this new Pulsar bike include the Hero Mavrick 440, KTM 250 Duke, Triumph Speed 400, TVS Apache RTR 310, and the Bajaj Dominar 400. The NS400Z's base price is Rs 1.85 lakh (ex-showroom). The Hero Mavrick 440, on the other hand, comes in three variants: base, mid, and top, priced at Rs 1.99 lakh, Rs 2.14 lakh, and Rs 2.24 lakh, respectively (all prices are ex-showroom). This means that the Pulsar is Rs 14,000 less expensive than the base model of the Mavrick 440.

The two motorcycles have completely distinct aesthetics. With design cues from other Pulsar models in the NS line, the Pulsar NS400Z is a naked, aggressive streetfighter. While the back tail lamp is the same as what we have seen on past Pulsars, the new LED projector headlight has lightning-bolt daytime running lamps. A robust fuel tank with large tank shrouds is also available. The Mavrick 440, on the other hand, is a roadster with a sizable fuel tank, certain vintage elements like a round headlamp, and a single-piece seat.

The Dominar 400 and Pulsar NS400Z use the same engine. The unit is a 373cc liquid-cooled unit with 39.5bhp of maximum power and 35Nm of peak torque at 8,800 and 6,500rpm, respectively. The Mavrick 440, meanwhile, has an air-oil-cooled engine that is optimised to provide torque at low revs. At 6,000rpm, it produces 27bhp, and at 4,000rpm, 36Nm.

The two motorcycles include Bluetooth-enabled LCD screens, turn-by-turn navigation, LED lighting, and dual-channel ABS, among other amenities. However, the Bajaj beats the Hero by having a colour LCD unit rather than a negative one. The Pulsar NS400Z has a 5-step adjustable clutch and brake lever, ride-by-wire, switchable traction control, and four ride modes (road, rain, sport, and off-road).

The Pulsar NS400Z uses a perimeter frame that is supported by front and rear monoshocks and 43 mm upside-down forks.
