Here's everything you need to know about Bajaj's forthcoming flagship motorcycle, the Dominar 400.
Bajaj is all set to launch its first ever sub-400cc motorcycle in India in mid-December 2016. First showcased at the 2014 Delhi Auto Expo as Pulsar CS400 concept, the production version will flaunt an entirely different name – it may be called the Dominar 400 (VS400). When launched, the Dominar 400 will become the company's flagship motorcycle. As a result, there's a lot of expectations from the motorcycle. Let’s take a brief look at what all it packs,
Engine & Gearbox: The forthcoming Dominar 400 will come powered by the same liquid-cooled 373.2cc single-cylinder engine as the KTM Duke 390. Expect its power output to be somewhere around the 40bhp mark, and the peak torque figure around 35Nm. The engine will be mated to a 6-speed gearbox like the KTM, but since the Dominar VS400 will be positioned as a ‘power cruiser’, its gear-ratios may not be as short as the Duke’s. The Dominar 400 will be more of a relaxed cruiser than an outright performance machine.
Features: The Dominar 400 has been spied on a couple of occasions already, which means we have a fair idea on what all features and equipment it will pack. While the motorcycle resembles the concept from 2014, some of the goodies will be given a miss in the production model. For example, the Dominar 400 will have standard telescopic front forks instead of USD forks seen on the concept. Among some of the highlights on the forthcoming motorcycle, it will have LED turn-indicators, LED tail-lights, a fully-digital instrument cluster, dual-channel ABS, split-seats, etc.
Price: With the Dominar 400 being pitched as a cruiser, Bajaj is planning to eat into the sales of Royal Enfield in the Indian market. To do that, Bajaj will have to price the Dominar 400 quite aggressively. Our guess is that it will be priced at around Rs 1.60 lakh (ex-showroom) when it reaches the showrooms in December 2016.
