Volvo, the by-word for safety in the global automotive industry, has been in operation since 1927. Today, Volvo is one of the most well-known and respected car brands in the world with sales of 534,332 cars in 2016 in about 100 countries.
Volvo has been under the ownership of the Zhejiang Geely Holding (Geely Holding) of China since 2010. It formed a part of the Swedish Volvo Group until 1999 when the company was bought by Ford Motor Company of the US.
Volvo has not only pioneered in making safe cars through the use of cutting-edge technology but it has also given the world some of the most important car safety innovations of the modern era. Some of the key innovations include the 3-point safety belt, introduced in 1959, which has saved over a million lives till date globally and the Lambda Sond which has resulted in the lowering of exhaust emission levels by nearly 90%. Ever since its inception in 1976, the Lambda Sond has found its way on nearly each and every petrol engine car ever produced in the world.
In order to tap the ever-growing premium luxury car market in India, Volvo made its official entry on the Indian automotive landscape in September 2007 as Volvo Auto India Pvt Ltd. Only focussing on demand and sales initially, Volvo Auto India set up its headquarters in Delhi with dealerships in Delhi, Chandigarh and Mumbai.
The first ever Volvo cars in India were the XC90 SUV and the S80 sedan, each with three different engine alternatives: the 4.4-litre petrol V8, the 3.2-litre petrol in-line six-cylinder and the 2.4-litre turbocharged diesel in-line five-cylinder, the D5.
The range of Volvo car models in India consists of the V40, V40 Cross Country, S60, S60 Cross Country, S60 Polestar, S90, V90 Cross Country, XC60, XC90, XC90 Excellence Hybrid and the due-to-launch XC40 (as of early-2018). In early 2017, Volvo announced that it would start its vehicle assembly operations in India via its new facility near Bengaluru, which, in turn would lead to better pricing. Volvo car key models in focus would be the ones based on their new SPA vehicle architecture. In October 2017, Volvo successfully rolled off the first locally-assembled XC90.
The company also announced that new Volvo car models launched from 2019 onwards will either be fully electric or hybrids. As of 2018, Volvo has more than 20 dealerships across India.
