When launched back in 2011, the Toyota Etios never really had throngs of customers in showrooms. But with the launch of the 2014 Toyota Etios Cross, Toyota intends to change that, for it targets India's love for compact crossovers. The Etios Cross, in essence, is a Liva, with the additional body cladding giving it a rugged look. And of course, it scores well on space, gets increased ground clearance, and being a Toyota, is renowned for being reliable as well. We'll have to see if a conventional hatchback that has diversified itself into a pseudo-crossover sub-segment, has what it takes to convince the Indian psyche.

Exterior

From the outside, the Toyota Etios Cross new model looks identical to the Liva, except for the plastic cladding that masks much of the hatchback's design, and gives it a rugged look. Up-front, it gets a silver pseudo skid plate, a faux bull bar-like styling element and a two-part grille, flanked by the same headlamps seen on the Liva. Just like the front and rear, the sides too, get black plastic kit on the lower half of the car, and the dual-tone, black and silver 15-inch alloy wheels look stylish. Further adding to the Etios Cross' rugged appeal, are the roof rails, and the spoiler at the rear. You also get a revised tail lamp clusters and a faux skid plate at the back as well. The Etios Cross is 40mm wider, 120mm longer and 45mm taller than the Liva. And the tailgate has an 'Etios Cross' badging on it.

Variants

The Toyota Etios Cross variants are as follows: G, V, D-4D GD and D-4D VD. Features include a rear defogger and wiper, digital tachometer, reverse parking sensors, cooled glovebox, height-adjustable driver's seat, steering-mounted audio controls, a 2-DIN audio system with Bluetooth, aux and USB compatibility, and electrically-foldable ORVMs. On the feature front, and for the price, Toyota Etios Cross seems indecently equipped. On the safety front, it comes equipped with dual ISOFIX child-seat locks, dual front airbags and ABS with EBD.

Interior

The cabin boasts of an all-black finish and gets refreshing seat fabric as well. You'll also notice piano-black accents on the doors, central console and instrument cluster. There's also a step-up in quality of plastics, and the seats have Etios Cross embossed on them. The front seats provide good comfort, while occupants at the rear have ample legroom and the seats offer good support. Also, the backrests are well inclined, making the rear bench a comfortable one for passengers. Boot space, at 251 litres, is pretty good.

Engine Specifications & Performance

The Toyota Etios Cross is powered by two engine options: a 1.2-litre petrol engine that produces 79bhp and 104Nm of torque, a 1.4-litre diesel engine that makes 67bhp and 170Nm of torque, and a 1.5-litre petrol engine that makes 89bhp and 132Nm of torque. All three engines are paired to a 5-speed manual transmission. The 1.5-litre petrol Etios Cross is best suited to the city. Throttle response is good, and out on the highways, the car feels quite peppy too. The diesel engine, on the other hand, is a decent performer, with reasonable amounts of power at your disposal, both - in the city and on the highway. Also, turbo-lag isn't all that prominent. However, the 1.5-litre petrol and 1.4-litre diesel engines could've been better in terms of overall refinement. But then again, it would have pushed the Toyota Etios Cross on-road price by a considerable margin. Over bad roads, the Etios Cross does a good job of soaking in the bumps, and the steering feels well weighted.

Mileage

The Toyota Etios Cross' ARAI-certified fuel efficiency figure is rated at 23.59kmpl for the diesel model and 16.78kmpl for the petrol model.
