Established in 2005 Nissan Motor India Private Limited (NMIPL) is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Nissan Motor Company of Japan. In 1999, Nissan was facing severe financial difficulties due to which it entered into an alliance with Renault. The first ever Nissan car in India was the X-Trail, which was brought in as a CBU.
However, due to Nissan’s unfamiliarity with the Indian car buyers, the X-Trail failed to take-off as a successful model. Same was the case with the other Nissan car models like the 370Z and the Teana, which were launched in 2010 and 2011 respectively.
Falling back to its global alliance partner Renault, NMIPL and Renault signed a MoU with the Government of Tamil Nadu in 2008 in order to set up a manufacturing plant near Chennai. In March 2010, the plant was officially inaugurated. Post this restructuring the Nissan Micra became the first official offering from Nissan India, launched in 2010. In 2016, Nissan wanted to expand its product portfolio by tapping into the rising demand for supercars in the country, as a result of which, it launched its global icon, the GT-R, in India.
Nissan has a relatively restricted number of cars on sale in India, starting with Micra, Sunny, Kicks, Terrano, and the GT-R supercar. All Nissan cars in India are manufactured in Oragadam, Tamil Nadu.
Nissan car prices (as of 2019) range from Rs. 5.25 lakh for the base Micra model, and goes all the way up to a mind-numbing Rs. 2.12 crores for the performance-packed GT-R.
