Mercedes-Benz GLB Highlights
The GLB is a compact luxury SUV produced by the German carmaker Mercedes-Benz. It was first showcased to the public as a concept vehicle at the Shanghai Auto Show in the spring of 2019.
When you see the list of Mercedes SUVs, the luxury carmaker has positioned the GLB between the entry-level GLA and the larger-in-size GLC. That said, the GLB is supposed to be cheaper than the GLC, but in India, it is the other way around. Thanks to the CBU route, this compact crossover SUV demands an extra premium over the GLC. The price difference between these two SUVs is approximately Rs 2–3 lakh. However, the luxury carmaker's recently launched SUV has no direct competitors in the market. But at the GLB's price, you can consider the Volvo XC60, Audi Q5, Kia EV6, Range Rover Evoque, Audi A6, and BMW 3 Series Limo, to name a few.
Mercedes-Benz GLB Engine and Other Specifications
For starters, let's talk about the GLB's chassis. Mercedes-Benz's in-house-developed MFA2 platform underpins several Mercedes cars, such as the GLB's electric (EQB), the CLA, the GLA, the A-Class, and the B-Class.
Besides that, the German carmaker offers two turbocharged engine options on this compact SUV. There is a GLC 200 and a GLC 220d. The GLC 200 has a 1.3-litre turbocharged petrol engine, which churns out 161 bhp at 5500 rpm and 250 Nm of torque at 1620 rpm. This petrol variant is exclusive to a seven-speed DCT unit.
On the other hand, the GLC 220d has a 2.0-litre turbocharged diesel engine that produces 188 bhp at 3800 rpm and 400 Nm of torque at 1600 rpm. This engine works in tandem with an eight-speed DCT gearbox. As for the drivetrain, the petrol variant has a front-wheel drivetrain as standard, while the diesel variant has both a front- and all-wheel drivetrain as options.
Mercedes-Benz GLB Exterior
Given the front fascia of the GLB, it will most likely make you recall the predecessor of the current GLS. From some angles, it also resembles the GLK-Class.
The non-AMG trim of the GLB looks simple and elegant, as it gets two separate louvres with silver and chrome treatments on the radiator grille. There are also some minor cosmetic differences between the standard and AMG variants. The non-AMG trim has standard 18-inch five-spoke light-alloy wheels.
On the contrary, the AMG trim boasts AMG's signature diamond-cut radiator grille to give the SUV a sporty appeal. Further, the inclusion of a single chrome louvre bifurcates the radiator grille.
As for the wheels, this variant gets an AMG-specific 19-inch five-twin-spoke light-alloy rim. Moreover, the lower section of the SUV's body also has black cladding that gives the GLB a butch look. In addition, you will also notice a few chrome inserts on some sections of the body.
In terms of lighting, the Mercedes GLB has an all-LED light setup. You will get inverted L-shaped lights incorporating LED DRLs, indicators, and main headlights. In addition, this SUV also offers LED foglamps at the front and rear ends. At the rear, the Mercedes-Benz GLB's taillights perfectly match the new-age Mercedes cars' theme, as they look similar to the current-gen GLC and GLE.
Mercedes-Benz GLB Interior
The Stuttgart-based luxury car manufacturer has proven to be the pinnacle of luxury in the industry. Be it the standard S-Class, GLS, S-Class Maybach, or GLS Maybach, they are all ultra-luxurious in the segment. Inside the cabin, you'll get 64-colour ambient lighting, fabric-leatherette upholstery with a dual-tone colour scheme of beige and black, a leather-wrapped multi-functional steering wheel, etc. As far as user interaction is concerned, the GLB has a dual display like other Mercedes-Benz cars. The dual displays incorporate a fully digital instrument cluster and a touchscreen infotainment unit. Other in-cabin features include Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, a panoramic sunroof, dual-zone auto HVAC, cruise control, dual 12V charging ports, etc.
This German SUV also boasts electrically adjustable side window blinds at the rear, one-touch windows (all), and a cooled glove box, to name a few.
Mercedes-Benz GLB Safety Features
Luxury carmakers pay as much attention to passengers' safety as to interior and exterior designs. That said, the GLB's safety rating is five stars, as awarded by Euro NCAP.
The GLB has a plethora of safety features. They include forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, high-beam assist, emergency brake light, blind-spot detection, etc. Besides that, it also has seven airbags, a tyre pressure monitoring system, and child-seat anchorages, to name a few. Further, the driving safety features include ABS with EBD, traction control, brake assist, optional torque-on-demand (only in the 4MATIC variant), hill-hold control, and optional hill-descent control.
Mercedes-Benz GLB Price and Variants
The German luxury carmaker sells this luxury compact SUV in three variants. The Progressive Line has the GLC 200 and the GLC 220d, while the top-of-the-line is the GLC 220d 4MATIC AMG-Line.
Moreover, in the GLB price range, you can consider the BMW X3, Volvo XC40, Mercedes-Benz C-Class, and Kia EV6, to name a few.
