With the production of the 1.3-litre diesel discontinued, the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga is now only on sale with the 1.5-litre petrol and diesel engine options. The Ertiga petrol on sale is already BS-VI compliant

Maruti Suzuki has discontinued the production of the 1.3-litre diesel powered Ertiga. We spoke to a few dealers across the country, while some are still hold stock of old units to sell, others only have the new Ertiga with the 1.5-litre diesel on offer.

The BS-VI norms kicking in next year will mark the end of the road for certain engines that may not comply with the stringent standards. Fiat’s 1.3-litre diesel is one such example. Although this motor survived the shift to BS-IV, it may not make the next big jump to BS-VI. In its glory days this engine was used by several carmakers like Maruti Suzuki, Tata, Chevrolet and of course Fiat. Today, Maruti Suzuki uses this motor in the Swift, Baleno, Dzire, S-Cross, Brezza and the Ciaz, while Tata still uses it in the Bolt and the Zest. Fiat continues to use this motor across its model range. Given that the 1.3 MultiJet diesel may not be upgraded to meet the BS-VI norms, expect it to be gradually phased out of all of these models by April 2020. With that in mind, and since the Vitara Brezza is only on sale with the 1.3-litre diesel currently, expect Maruti Suzuki to launch the compact SUV with a petrol motor soon.

Meanwhile, Maruti Suzuki will continue to sell the Ertiga with the 1.5-litre petrol and diesel motors. The petrol-powered Ertiga makes 103bhp and 138Nm. This engine comes paired with either a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic. This engine is already BS-VI compliant. The diesel, on the other hand, churns out 94bhp and 225Nm. This motor only comes paired with a 6-speed manual transmission.
