Hyundai Kona Electric Highlights
With the Hyundai Kona Electric, Hyundai Motor India becomes the first brand in the country to sell a fully electric SUV – and one that isn't just eco-friendly but also manages long-range urban travel as well. India hasn't had the necessary infrastructure to support the existence of EVs in the past, but with the Kona EV, that is sure to change, for Hyundai has considered setting up charging stations at its dealerships. Also, Hyundai Kona Electric on-road price slots it in the company’s model portfolio as a niche offering, as it is not produced in the country. The Kona brings with it a good chassis, a long list of equipment, a claimed driving range of 452km, funky styling and spacious interiors – all matched to the aggressive Hyundai Kona Electric price.
Hyundai Kona Electric Latest Updates
- 25 June 2024: Hyundai discontinues the Kona Electric from India after around five years of its launch.
Hyundai Kona Electric Exterior
The Kona isn't going to be a common sight on our roads, and its contemporary styling is sure to turn heads. Up-front, it gets a sloping nose with dimpled impressions that make for the enclosed radiator grille, flanked by slim headlamps that are connected by a slender bar above the grille. There's also the charging socket that is located right beside the Hyundai logo at the front. That muscular bonnet is worth a mention, and so is the sharp belt line that adds to the SUV's somewhat masculine crossover appeal. The tapered LED tail lamps at the rear look cool, and the raised tail gate adds some chunk to the rear portion.
Hyundai Kona Electric Variants
The Hyundai Kona Electric variants are as follows: Premium and Premium Dual Tone. Features include heated and ventilated front seats, leather steering, electric parking brake, powered sunroof, a 10-way electrically adjustable driver's seat, 7.0-inch digital dashboard, automatic climate control, and an 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. On the safety front, it is equipped with 6 airbags, traction control, rear parking sensors, rear defogger, ABS with EBD, ESC, a rear camera, hill-start assist and Virtual Engine Sound System – a safety feature that replicates the noise of an internal combustion engine, helping other road users.
Hyundai Kona Electric Interior
Inside the cabin, it's only tyre noise that can be heard; it's that refined. The infotainment touchscreen is mounted on top of the dashboard, in the middle. There is no gear-shifter; what you get instead is an electronic shift-by-wire setup with individual buttons for every gear. Also new to the Hyundai Kona Electric new model are nice, one-touch paddle-shifters behind the steering. Keep the paddle-shifter to the left pressed for a while, and it will bring the Kona Electric to a stop. The levels of fit and finish are really good, and everything feels solidly put together. The seats are comfortable and supportive, but leg room could've been better at the rear.
Hyundai Kona Electric Engine Specifications & Performance
The Hyundai Kona Electric is powered by a Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor that produces 134bhp and 395Nm of torque, and draws its power from a liquid-cooled 39.2kWh Li-ion battery pack. It can manage the 0-100km/h sprint in 9.7 seconds. Power delivery is strong when the road straightens up. Through the paddle-shifters, you can also adjust the regen and set it to a driving style you're comfortable with. Acceleration is pretty impressive, and the steering is quite light, making it perfect for urban conditions. It has three driving modes: Eco, Comfort and Sport. In Sport mode, the throttle is very responsive, while Eco mode is more for a relaxed nature of driving. Ride quality is good, with bumps being soaked up without a fuss.
Hyundai Kona Electric Mileage
The Hyundai Kona Electric's ARAI-certified driving range figure is rated at 452km on a single charge, for both the variants.
