Hyundai Kona Electric gets ARAI-certified 452km driving range
To maximise curiosity & interest among potential customers as well as the automotive industry, Hyundai has revealed a rather crucial bit of information - the Kona Electric's driving range. The Kona Electric will be capable of driving 452km, on a single charge, in Indian conditions.
With an ARAI-certified driving range of 452km, the Hyundai Kona Electric will surely set the bar high for the future EVs which will arrive in India.
Hyundai is all set to launch its first-ever electric crossover SUV, the Kona Electric, in India tomorrow. However, to maximise curiosity & interest among potential customers as well as the automotive industry, Hyundai has revealed a rather crucial bit of information - the Kona Electric's driving range. While we had already informed our readers of its internationally-certified WLTP (Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure) cycle figure of 449km, we can now report that the Kona Electric will also be capable of driving 452km, on a single charge, in Indian conditions! This latest information has been certified by the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI), India's premier automotive R&D organisation.
To put things into perspective, a regular Tesla Model 3 (Rear-Wheel Drive) with a Standard Range battery offers about 386km of driving range on a single charge (as per EPA estimates). To put it into a more comparable Indian context, with the Kona Electric, you can complete a Delhi-Agra-Delhi trip on a single charge, with still a few kilometres left to potter around town.
In the international markets, the Kona Electric is offered in two versions - a short-range version & a long-range derivative. The former is a 134bhp version powered by a 39.2kWh battery pack, while the latter gets a 64kWh battery pack with a power output of 201bhp. Despite the different capacity & power output, both versions produce the same levels of torque and propel the car to a similar top speed. However, going by the ARAI-driving range revealed, expect Hyundai to stick with the long-range version for India, which will take the CKD route to reach our shores.
