Suzuki Two Wheelers began manufacturing motorcycles in 1952 and its first motorised bicycle, titled ‘Power Free’, used a 36cc, two-stroke engine clipped to the frame of a conventional bicycle. During the 1950s, 1960s and the better part of the 1970s, the company made motorcycles with two-stroke engines and made a remarkable reputation in the global motorcycle racing fraternity by winning numerous world titles. In 1965, the Suzuki T20 Super Six became a huge success and put Suzuki on the international map. The first ever Suzuki motorcycles with a four-stroke engine, the GS400 and GS750, were introduced in 1976. Thereafter, Suzuki established its reputation as a manufacturer of well-engineered sports motorcycles.
Suzuki all bikes, since their arrival in the country, are registered under the corporate entity Suzuki Motorcycles India Private Limited (SMIPL), which is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Japan-based Suzuki Motor Corporation (SMC). While SMIPL emerged as an independent automotive brand in India only a few years ago, Suzuki’s presence in India dates far back to 1982, a landmark year which saw Suzuki tie up with indigenous manufacturers Maruti and TVS for the production of affordable four-wheelers and two-wheelers, respectively.
While Maruti Suzuki continued to be a model alliance for the world, TVS and Suzuki were able to manage a 19-year long relationship which involved sharing of the technological know-how from Suzuki and the indigenisation methods from TVS. The collaborative entity reformed the Indian two-wheeler market and produced numerous motorcycles with bespoke technological advancements. Some examples include the Suzuki Supra, Shogun, Samurai and the Shaolin. The alliance came to an end in 2001. Suzuki bikes price list (as of 2018) start at ₹ 47,400 for the Let’s and go up to ₹ 19.8 lakh for the GSX-R1000R. SMIPL was set up after Suzuki's re-entry into the Indian two-wheeler market in 2006 with all the Suzuki latest bikes. The company has a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Gurugram, Haryana.
The Suzuki bikes India range consists of the Let’s, Access 125, Hayate, Intruder, Gixxer, GSX-S750, GSX-R1000R, GSX-S1000F, GSX-S1000 ABS, V-Strom 1000 and the Hayabusa which form the company’s 2018 product line-up.
