Motor sport's global governing body, International Automobile Federation (FIA), confirmed that Formula 1's control tyre supplier Pirelli will return as a tyre supplier to the World Rally Championship (WRC) on Thursday.

The WRC's official website (www.wrc.com) carried a statement by the FIA Rally Director Jarmo Mahonen confirming the Italian tyre company's return to rallying's blue riband championship, of which it was a control tyre supplier from 2008 to 2010.

It also supplied tyres to the WRC Academy cars in 2010 and 2012.

“We are obviously very pleased to have competition between four manufacturers next year, three of whom are already supporting our Championships.

“Having Pirelli return to the series is also very positive, and together these four brands will provide a great platform for open competition as well as choice and variety for our competitors.”

Pirelli will supply tyres along with DMACK, Michelin and Hankook.
