Reigning Formula 1 world drivers and constructors champions Red Bull Racing have produced a video explaining - with alarmingly detailed computer generated imagery - the new technical regulations that will govern the F1 world championship this year.
The video features Infiniti Red Bull Racing newcomer Daniel Ricciardo 'racing' against defending four-time F1 champion Sebastian Vettel, with the two drivers' voice overs featured as the RB9 (driven by Vettel) morphs into the RB10 that has had a torrid time of it in pre-season F1 testing.
Key changes featured are the revolutionary new F1 power units - that mate a turbocharged internal combustion engine with brake energy and heat derived energy recover systems - a lowered nose due to safety reasons, lower fuel allocation, the banning of blown diffusers through a single exhaust placed between the rear wing mounts.
Other important changes to the F1 rule book include the removal of the lower rear wing element, a shallower angle to the top elements, greater Drag Reduction System (DRS) allowance and a narrower front wing.
Controversy has surrounded the new regulations mainly due to the costs involved in implementing the high-tech regulations at a time when F1 has struggled to find sponsorship and teams have had to balance ballooning budgets with limited direct revenue through their racing activities.
Teams like Red Bull Racing, Mercedes AMG F1 and Ferrari have found the going relatively easier due to backing by large multinational corporations.
The new regulations have, however, generated interest among automotive manufacturers looking for relevance in a possible F1 participation.
Honda is due to come into the sport next year and is already supplying relatively small capacity, turbocharged engines in the Indycar championship and the Japanese Super Formula.
