MotoGP: Repsol Presence on 2024 Honda RC213V Livery to Scale Down

Repsol faces a significant transformation in its longstanding partnership with Honda in MotoGP, as the iconic orange livery yields to Honda's corporate colours. This surprising change calls into question the future of the historic sponsorship and its racing visual identity.

There will be a major overhaul to Repsol's colourful presence on the factory Honda bikes this year, which will come as a shock to MotoGP fans. To make place for the modern and corporate colours of the Japanese company, the distinctive orange hues that have graced Honda racing machines for thirty years will take a back seat.  Even though Repsol's bright orange livery has historical relevance, the Spanish oil giant gets little publicity on the two factory RC213Vs this milestone year. As per the source, there has been a reduction in the size of the Repsol emblem on all Honda pit trucks, hospitality facilities, and bikes as part of the reduction. Unlike previous moves, this one appears to be an attempt to shake up one of the most iconic liveries in motorbike racing by suggesting a change in branding and visual style.

MotoGP: What’s the Reason Behind this Decision?

As per the source, Marc Marquez's departure to Gresini Ducati has created opportunities for Repsol to reevaluate the financial components of their alliance, which is a significant move in the MotoGP world. Although these discussions have not yet concluded, Honda has taken the risky tack of believing that Repsol's sponsorship contribution is not significant enough to merit the usual prominent placement on the RC213V's livery.

This bold move is in line with Honda's larger goal of strengthening its brand identification. The company plans to incorporate its corporate colours—red, white, and blue—into all factory teams across several sports, including World Superbike, Dakar, and motocross.

Repsol finds itself in a tense negotiation with Honda following the latter's unpopular decision. Two weeks remain before the Sepang pre-season test, where Honda is planning to display bikes with black-painted fairings, breaking with tradition. This out-of-the-box decision has cast doubt on the eventual form of the racing machines designed by Joan Mir and Luca Marini.

The fact that Honda cut connections with Red Bull when Marquez left adds petrol to the flames. As a result, there is noticeably no Red Bull branding on the bike fairings or in the paddock hospitality area. The scene is less festive than expected as Repsol prepares to celebrate its 30th season as Honda's sponsor in the midst of MotoGP's green transition. This is particularly true given the sport's imminent move towards 40% non-fossil fuels in 2024 and 100% synthetic petrol in 2027.
