With Yamaha's Jorge Lorenzo looking set to start the Czech Grand Prix at Brno from pole position, current MotoGP championship leader Marc Marquez decided to shake things up a little by storming to pole position in the dying seconds of qualifying at the 5.403km, 15-turn Masaryk Circuit.

The Honda rider finished with a lap of 1min. 54.596sec, 0.253 seconds ahead of Lorenzo and almost another four tenths of a second ahead of Ducati's Andrea Iannone, who is fresh of his maiden MotoGP victory at the Austrian GP last week.

Further behind were Suzuki's Aleix Espargaro, Avintia Ducati's Hector Barbera and Yamaha's Valentino Rossi on the second row of the starting grid.

Ducati's Andrea Dovizioso, Suzuki's Maverick Vinales and Honda's Dani Pedrosa occupy the third row of the grid while LCR Honda's Cal Crutchlow completes the top ten.
