After his triumph in the British KF3 Karting Championship last year and the Asia-Pacific KF3 Championship in 2012, 15-year-old Jehan Daruvala from Mumbai continued his progression in kart racing by taking the second runner-up position in the senior category of the CIK (International Karting Commission) World Karting Championship - sanctioned by the FIA, the governing body of Formula 1 - at Essay, France this Sunday.
From entry list comprising of over 70 of the most promising karters from around the world, Daruvala had a slow-ish start by taking 18th and 15th in qualifying practice and the qualifying heat, respectively.
Daruvala improved exponentially however, by taking 5th in the pre-final before finishing third behind Great Britain's Lando Norris and Russia's Nikita Mazepin out of 33 classified karters where the top ten across the finish line of the 25-lap final were covered by just under 12 seconds.
The CIK-FIA KF Karting World Championship has been a stepping stone for top international racing stars including the likes of Ayrton Senna, Michael Schumacher, Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton.
The Sahara Force India Academy driver has consistently been producing top results in his karting career that started in 2009 when he started racing in the Micro Max category of the National Karting Championship with former national karting champion Rayomand Banajee's Rayo Racing team.
“We were unable to get the perfect setup for the set of tyres I had in the heats, so I was a bit off pace," said Jehan Daruvala. "I’m glad it rained in the pre-final. It was a lot of fun making up 10 positions. In the final I had a great start and I was leading for a few laps, but Lando had good pace. It’s a bit disappointing to be 3rd after this, but it’s a good result. I would like to thank everyone who has made this possible, Sahara Force India Academy, Team RFM, my mechanic and my parents”
Daruvala - who will be 16-years-old this October - is currently leading the German KF Championship.
