Jaguar will return to motor racing in 2016, replacing the beleaguered Trulli squad in the third season of Formula E.
Jaguar will enter Formula E in partnership with Williams Advanced Engineering, a sister company of the Williams F1 team. The two companies have already collaborated in development of the C-X75 plug-in hybrid concept car.
Speaking about their return to racing, Nick Rogers, Group Engineering Director for Jaguar Land Rover, said: “I am proud to announce Jaguar's return to racing with an entry into the innovative FIA Formula E championship. Electric vehicles will absolutely play a role in Jaguar Land Rover's future product portfolio and Formula E will give us a unique opportunity to further our development of electrification technologies. The Championship will enable us to engineer and test our advanced technologies under extreme performance conditions.
The British car maker competed for five consecutive seasons in Formula 1 between 2000 and 2004, scoring two podium finishes.
Prior to their F1 entry, Jaguar successfully competed in sportscar racing, winning three world champions in late 80s and early 90s. More importantly, it took outright victory at Le Mans at seven occasions, making it one of the most successful manufacturers at the fabled event.
Jaguar is owned by Indian conglomerate Tata Group through their Tata Motors subsidiary.
