Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton grabbed pole position for the fourth time this season as he blazed across the circuit and set the fastest time in qualifying at the Hungarian Grand Prix. In fact, he was surprised when he was told about being on pole and wondered how the hell he pulled it off.
The surprise though was on everybody else’s faces too because the laps Red Bull racing driver Sebastian Vettel was putting in, looked enough to put him up for pole. Hamilton clocked 1 minute, 19.388 seconds, just ahead of Vettel's best lap of 1:19.426.
Lotus driver Roman Grosjean did a 1:19:595, which put him in third place. The track temperature on the Hungaroring circuit reached 50 degrees celsius, and we can expect similar temperatures on race day tomorrow. Tyre degradation hence, will be a topic which will be most talked about and Pirelli has a lot to think about.
Red Bull's Mark Webber did not make a run in Q3 because of a problem with KERS and will start from 10th position. Jenson Button also missed the cut for Q3, finishing in 13th while the bad run for Force India driver Paul di Resta continued as he didn’t even make it to Q2.
Red Bull and Mercedes have combined to take all 10 poles this season — with Vettel getting all three for Red Bull and Nico Rosberg and Hamilton sharing pole positions. But considering the conversation rate of pole positions to wins when it comes to the Mercedes team, my money is on Red Bull’s Vettel.
