The all-electric FIA Formula E Championship has revealed digital renderings of its second-generation Gen 2 car that will be shown, in the flesh, on March 6 at the Geneva International Auto Show. It will make its competitive debut in the 2018-19 Formula E season.

The car is unique in that it is the first ever racing car to have been designed by the International Automobile Federation (FIA), the governing body of global motorsport including championships like F1, WRC and the WEC.

Like in the four seasons that will precede it, the fifth season of Formula E, in which the car will make its debut, will see a common set of components that will be built by the competing manufacturers, but with one big exception.

Season five will see manufacturers being able to make their own bespoke powertrains that will have double the electric storage capacity and double the range. This will lead to a very improved performance, which means that teams will be able to complete the full race (currently around 160kms) without having to make a mid-race car swap.

The car also features a split rear-wing instead of one single element. Such an idea was once proposed for the design of F1 cars as a way to reduce the turbulent air that would reach the front-wing of a following car. It was mooted as a solution to make it easier for F1 cars to follow each other through corners at high speeds in order to improve overtaking.

Indian manufacturer Mahindra competes in Formula E with its Mahindra Racing team and is currently leading both the drivers' and teams' championships after three rounds of the ongoing 2017-18 Formula E season.

A physical model of the Gen2 car as well as a list of technical specifications are set to be revealed at the Geneva Motor Show on March 6 this year.
