McLaren has revealed the 2024 Formula One car that Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri will be driving, the MCL38. Keeping with its signature papaya orange and black colour scheme, this new model is an updated version of the highly successful MCL60, which reached fourth place in the 2023 championship thanks to critical mid-season modifications.
With the MCL38, the team's new technical organisation at Woking and team head Andrea Stella have finally worked together to develop this vehicle. In 2023, McLaren had a remarkable climb in the standings, which was helped by this makeover. Not only that, but the vehicle is the first product of McLaren's cutting-edge wind tunnel. Prominent transfers including Red Bull's Rob Marshall and Ferrari's David Sanchez have joined the squad.
The goal for McLaren this year is to improve upon last year's great showing and beat Norris and Piastri's record of eight podium finishes. Despite falling behind Red Bull for much of the second half of the 2023 season, McLaren is confident in their chances thanks to the new MCL38 and their enhanced team competence.
McLaren Racing CEO Zak Brown said: “It’s awesome to be able to launch our 2024 competitor, the MCL38, at Silverstone today. It’s great to see our new car in its 2024 livery on track and see the hard work and dedication of the team come together. The fantastic thing about this sport is how competitive it is, and therefore we must remain realistic as every team will have made progress in the off-season. The true test of whether we’ve made steps in the right direction will be qualifying in Bahrain. We’re all excited to go racing again, but we know there’s a long season ahead of us and a lot of work still to do to ensure we build on the progress we made throughout 2023.”
Team Principal Andrea Stella said: “The team are excited to present the MCL38 today and to see it on track for the first time. Going into this year, we look to build on the momentum of last season but are realistic in the knowledge that every team will have made progress and found competitiveness for their 2024 cars. We now have everything in place from an infrastructure, people and culture perspective so we continue to push forward and build on the work done to get us back to front of the grid."
“Before we hit the track for competitive sessions, we have a lot of work to do, including putting the MCL38 through its paces during the Bahrain pre-season test. The team has done a good job over the winter, and we are confident we can hit the ground running, but we know we have important tasks at hand before the season starts. There are a number of innovations on the car, but not all the areas we want to address have been completed for our launch-spec car. Those areas now become the focus of our in-season development, which is already in progress,” he added.
F1: McLaren Hopes to Fight for Race Win in 2024
After a difficult start in 2023, McLaren climbed their way to a respectable fourth-place finish in the Constructors' Championship. Not surprisingly, the result has garnered a lot of attention and has sparked hopes that McLaren can challenge Red Bull in the 2024 season.
Even though Red Bull won all races except the Singapore, McLaren was a formidable opponent, surpassing even Ferrari and Mercedes in many races. After a sensational 2023 season fans are eager to see what the future holds for McLaren. As a result of their strong development effort, McLaren was in a good position to challenge Red Bull for the second-fastest team.
Max Verstappen, the current world champion, is keeping an eye on McLaren as the new season approaches, and he is confident in the team's ability to become a dominant force from the start. After what Verstappen calls the "most impressive" change in 2023, he sees McLaren as a formidable rival for the next season.
