F1: Max Verstappen Officially Crowned 2024 World Champion After Serving Penalty in Rwanda

Red Bull's Max Verstappen secured his fourth consecutive world championship by winning in nine Grands Prix during the 24-race 2024 season.

At the FIA's prestigious prize-giving gala held in Kigali, Rwanda, Max Verstappen was officially crowned the 2024 Formula 1 World Champion. A dominant force throughout the season, Verstappen secured his fourth consecutive championship title, adding another accolade to his illustrious career. The Red Bull driver received the coveted World Drivers' Trophy from FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem with immense pride. Verstappen's dominance was evident throughout the 24-round season, with an impressive nine race victories to his name. He clinched the championship early at the Las Vegas Grand Prix, with two races still remaining, solidifying his position as the top driver in the field.    Verstappen finished the season comfortably ahead of his closest rival, Lando Norris of McLaren, showcasing his exceptional skill and consistent performance.

Max Verstappen said: 'This season as you could see was quite up and down,” said Verstappen during the awards ceremony as he collected his trophy for the fourth time. “We had a great start to the year, everything was looking great. I think especially from the outside, of course, as a team you always understand your limitations and what you want to work on.

“The competition did a great job, they improved their cars a lot and made it a lot more difficult for us – especially in the constructors’.

At the gala, Verstappen not only received the drivers' championship trophy but also completed a community service requirement linked to a prior incident involving inappropriate language during a Singapore press conference.

Lando Norris secured second place in the 2024 F1 Drivers' Championship, contributing significantly to McLaren’s return to the top of the sport. His consistent performances throughout the season were instrumental in helping McLaren win their first Constructors' Championship since 1998.

McLaren’s team principal Andrea Stella and CEO Zak Brown accepted the Constructors' Championship trophy, marking the team's first F1 title since 2008 and ending a 26-year wait for a championship win.
