The saying goes that the more things change, the more they stay the same. Lewis Hamilton proved that to an extent by taking Mercedes's sixth pole out of nine race weekends in the 2013 Formula 1 world championship for the German Grand Prix at the Nurburgring.

Hamilton's pole position came despite the German squad's disappointment at misjudging teammate Nico Rosberg's gap to the cut-off point in the second segment of qualifying. The error saw the three-time polesitter having to miss out on the third and final leg of qualifying and will start a provisional 11th on the starting grid.

Home hero and three-time defending F1 champion Sebastian Vettel will start second on the grid after setting a time 0.103 seconds slower than Hamilton's 1:29.398.
