Lewis Hamilton's late flyer in the third and final segment of qualifying for the British Grand Prix at Silverstone secured Mercedes's fifth pole position out of eight Formula 1 race weekends this season.

Hamilton was tailed by teammate Nico Rosberg whose provisional pole position time the 2008 world champion beat by 0.452 seconds.

A further 0.152 and 0.161 seconds behind in third and fourth place in the classification were the Red Bull Racing drivers Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber.

Early championship challengers to Vettel's crown Kimi Raikkonen and Fernando Alonso had a subdued qualifying session, taking ninth and tenth place on the starting grid.

Also grabbing the headlines in qualifying on the 5.901 km long circuit was Force India's Paul Di Resta who set the fifth fastest time.

Di Resta was trailed by the impressive Toro Rosso driver Daniel Ricciardo and his teammate Adrian Sutil.

Romain Grosjean placed ahead of Lotus F1 teammate Raikkonen in eighth.
