The time has finally come! After about 17,000km of companionship, it’s time for me to say goodbye to our trusty long-term vehicle – the Maruti Suzuki Fronx. During the time it spent with us – 13 months to be exact – the car managed to carve a special place for itself not only in my mind but also in the minds of my colleagues and the people around me. As I write this, a few days have passed since the car went back, and it was only on its last day that I realised just how much a chunk of metal, rubber and cables can mean to you if you spend enough time with it. The kind gentleman who took on the task of keeping our favourite shoot support car clean every day began to think that perhaps I owned it and could not bear the thought of parting with it. I suppose it became routine after all this time, a habit – just like it did for me.
Now, of course, I’m expected to share the highs and lows of my experience. So, let me cut to the chase. I love the presence of the Fronx; despite not being the largest in its segment, it manages to leave a lasting impression with its design and coupe-like roofline. Dare I say, it’s the best-looking car you can buy for under ₹15 lakh in India. However, the cabin experience hasn’t been the best. It always left me wanting more – a feeling that only grew stronger as newer cars were launched during my time with it. As for fuel efficiency, I averaged about 12 km/l in the city and around 18 km/l on the highway. Nothing broke down during my time with the car, and there were no complaints apart from the occasionally glitchy infotainment system. What I’ll remember most is the ride quality, comfort, and reliability of the Fronx, despite it being put through a variety of driving conditions.
Finally, I would say that the Fronx is a car that should be appreciated beyond its spec sheet, as it manages to get the fundamentals of the driving experience – like ride, handling, performance, and mileage – just right, as is typical for Maruti Suzuki cars. After spending a year with ‘Fronxie,’ it’s a warm goodbye from the team at autoX.
