While SUVs and crossovers continue to gain popularity, the love for sedans continues to be strong in the minds of automotive enthusiasts. However, one cannot deny that sales of sedans aren't as great as they once used to be, prompting many manufacturers to discontinue their offerings in India. Those that remain, including the Hyundai Verna, the Honda City, the Volkswagen Virtus, the Skoda Slavia, and the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz, are struggling with decreasing numbers. Interestingly, though, as of July 2024, the Volkswagen Virtus remains the sole sedan in the Indian market with increasing sales numbers.
Volkswagen Virtus Sales
The Volkswagen Virtus has solidified its position as the dominant force in the compact sedan market. Year-to-date wholesale figures for Virtus reached 11,572 units by July 2024, representing a modest yet significant 1.6% increase compared to the same period in 2023.

Hyundai Verna Sales
In contrast, the Hyundai Verna, previously a strong competitor, has experienced a substantial decline. With only 11,364 units sold YTD, Verna's sales have plummeted by 41.2% compared to the same period last year.
Honda City Sales
Honda City, a stalwart in the segment, has witnessed a decline as well. Sales have decreased by 45.8% YTD to 7,117 units, compared to 13,122 units in the same period last year. Despite its loyal customer base, the City's performance has been impacted by the overall market shift.
Skoda Slavia Sales
Skoda Slavia, which entered the market with promise, has also faced challenges. Sales have dropped by 22.1% to 8,443 units YTD. While its European appeal initially attracted buyers, sustaining growth has proven difficult in a highly competitive landscape.
Maruti Suzuki Ciaz Sales
Maruti Suzuki Ciaz, once a segment leader, has experienced the most dramatic decline. Sales have plunged by 41.5% to 4,206 units YTD.

The compact sedan segment is facing a perfect storm. Shifting consumer preferences towards SUVs, coupled with intense competition within the segment itself, has led to declining sales. The rapid growth of compact and sub-compact SUV segments has further exacerbated this trend. Industry sales data clearly indicates a substantial migration of buyers from traditional hatchbacks and sedans to the SUV category. The Volkswagen Virtus, on the flip side, continues to hold the fort for sedan lovers in India.
