It is no secret that GoPro is the undisputed leader of the world of action cameras. Over the years, GoPro has managed to push the boundaries and set new benchmarks for others to follow. In fact, they have been doing it for 11 generations. So, the question is – can the 12th generation of the iconic camera – the GoPro Hero 12 Black – take the game a step further? And more importantly, can it still be relevant in the face of growing competition?
In terms of the camera itself, things haven’t changed much. You still get a 27.6MP lens, which can shoot videos of up to 5.3K resolution. And the framerate can go as high as 240fps at lower resolutions. The quality of videos and images captured by the camera is still great. You get vibrant colours, a properly exposed sky (thanks to HDR), and the ability to shoot some cool slow-motion videos. At autoX, where we put numerous cars and bikes through their paces, having an action camera like the GoPro is a must. Whether mounting it inside the car, strapping it to a motorcycle’s handlebars, or wearing it on our chest, the GoPro offers endless possibilities for capturing high-quality and cool footage. Moreover, given the vast array of accessories available, the GoPro offers something for every kind of shot imaginable. What’s more, Hero 12 allows you to shoot vertical videos without the need to physically tilt the camera sideways.
Given the dynamic nature of our work, there is always a risk of the GoPro falling off a moving vehicle or experiencing damage in other ways. Naturally, the camera must not only be sturdy enough to withstand the elements but also robust enough to keep functioning even after enduring rough handling. Over the years, I’ve witnessed these tiny action cameras survive some nasty falls, and the Hero 12 is no different. Needless to say, it’s a perfect tool for our line of work, no doubt about it.

The new GoPro comes equipped with HyperSmooth 6.0, which promises even better stabilisation. While I didn’t notice a significant improvement in smoothness, there is nothing to complain about either. Even if you’re vlogging with the GoPro in hand, the footage comes out silky smooth every time, so there’s no need to spend money on gimbals. Even the touchscreen operation is excellent – it has been hassle-free for me so far.
GoPro has been highlighting the Hero 12’s better battery life and thermal management. Having done plenty of outdoor shoots, I can vouch for the better heat management. While the battery life hasn’t seen the drastic improvement that the makers claim, it has definitely become better.
There might not be a lot of changes in the Hero 12 compared to the Hero 11, but that’s only because GoPro nailed the formula a while ago. Now, it’s just about adding a few features every now and then to keep things fresh. Pair that with an attractive price point, and the GoPro Hero 12 Black continues to be the go-to choice for adventure-seekers looking to document their escapades.
