Who would have thought that a 1.0 litre engine would gain so much international fame? Well, it seems that the historic American carmaker has done it again. Ford’s 3 cylinder 1.0 litreEcoBooost engine has won the “International Engine of the Year 2013” award. This means that the Ford is now one of only three carmakers in the world to record back-to-back victories in the 15-year history of the awards.

The panel of judges consisted of 87 automotive journalists from around the globe, and the best engine was decided based on drivability, performance, economy, refinement and the successful application of the engine’s advanced technology.

The 1.0 litreEcoBoost is a turbo charged, direct injection, three cylinder engine, and it’s achieved the highest score once again in the history of these prestigious awards. Globally, the EcoBoost engine is fitted in the Ford Fiesta, B-MAX, Focus, and the C-MAX – and, in India, the newly launched Ford EcoSport also sports this wonderful 1.0 litre engine.

Thanks to the above-mentioned tech, as well as variable valve timing, the engine is very efficient and lowers fuel consumption without compromising on power.  “With a technology as mature as the internal combustion engine, it’s very rare to achieve a true breakthrough, but that is exactly what the team accomplished with this engine,” said Joe Bakaj, Ford vice president, Global Powertrain. “You have to drive it to believe that a small three-cylinder engine can deliver such performance and fuel economy.”

The 1.0-litre EcoBoost was designed at Ford’s research and development centres in Germany and the United Kingdom, andtoday the engine is being built in the company’s plants in Germany and Romania. Because of the huge success of the engine, Ford has now announced that they have plans to double production of the engine at its Cologne Engine Plant to more than 1,000 engines a day to meet demand. The engine is already present in India, and will soon be available in China and North America.
