Mahindra's new flagship will not wear the Ssangyong badge in India anymore.
Mahindra has showcased the latest-generation Ssangyong Rexton at the ongoing Auto Expo, albeit with a different grille, which now sports the Mahindra badge.
Mahindra, therefore has confirmed that the new Rexton will be launched as a Mahindra in India, unlike its predecessor, which wore the original Ssangyong badge. This also effectively points towards Mahindra discontinuing the Ssangyong brand in India. However, Mahindra has not shared the name of the upcoming SUV, which will be launched in India sometime later this year.
New grille and name aside, the India-bound new Rexton will remain identical to the global-spec model which was released in early 2017. Dimension wise, it measures 4,850mm long, 1,920mm wide and 1,800mm high with a wheelbase of 2,864mm. Compared to the outgoing model, it’s longer by 130mm and has a wheelbase that’s 44m longer.
On the mechanical front, the new model is confirmed to be powered by a 2.2-litre turbo-diesel engine that makes 178bhp of power and 420Nm of torque. Transmission duties will be handled by a Mercedes-sourced, 7-speed automatic unit.
Equipment wise, the SUV is confirmed to feature LED DRLs, HID headlights, nine airbags, sunroof, ventilated seats, 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system and soft plastics & leather throughout the cabin to elevate the luxurious feel. Expect the new Mahindra flagship to compete in a segment that’s dominated by established players like the Toyota Fortuner and Ford Endeavour.
